I received a notification letter from Jeff T. Behler, Regional Director of The U.S. Census Bureau explaining that the U.S. Census Bureau conducts many surveys in the Lakewood community on a daily basis, and he wanted to alert our town of the possibility that a Census Bureau Field Representative may be visiting our community in the near future to collect data from respondents for one or more of the following surveys:
- Consumer Expenditure (CE) Survey, which collects a current and continuous series of data on consumer spending which is used to revise the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
- Current Population Survey (CPS) which provides estimates of employment, unemployment and other characteristics of the general labor force.
- National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) which gathers data on types and incidence of crime, monetary losses, physical injuries and property crimes.
- National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) which provides information on a continuing basis about illnesses, and its effects in terms of disability and chronic impairments and the kind of health services people receive.
- Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) which collects the source and amount of income, program participation and eligibility from a household to measure the effectiveness of existing federal, state and local programs and provides statistics on the distribution of income.
- American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS will provide elected officials, businesses, community leaders and planning organizations current information to assess local needs such as how to plan for emergency situations, where to build new roads, housing, schools and senior centers. The survey will help ensure that communities receive their fair share of federal funds awarded to localities based on Census Bureau data.
All of the information the Census Bureau collects for surveys is confidential under Title 13 or Title 15 of the U.S. Code. By law, every Census Bureau employee has taken an oath of office and is subject to a jail term, a fine, or both if he or she discloses ANY information that could identify an individual or specific household. The Census Bureau may use the information provided by households in your community for statistical purposes only and cannot publish or release information that will identify an individual or any specific household. All Census Bureau Field Representatives must present their Census identification cards to respondents and/or any officer of the law who questions their legitimacy. These identification cards are in compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12.
