On the morning of Friday, June 9, 2023, the Lakewood Police Department, and Lakewood High School united for the 40th Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, benefiting Special Olympics in New Jersey. This event celebrates the achievements of athletes with intellectual disabilities and brings communities together to support them. Over 3,000 officers participated, running through their local communities to raise awareness and promote inclusivity and respect for Special Olympics in New Jersey. Chief Gregory H. Meyer proudly supported their efforts, and special thanks were given to Gourmet Glatt of Lakewood and Hot Bagels Lakewood.
Later that evening, the NJSO Opening Games Ceremony took place at Trenton College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and spanned the entire weekend. Athletes who participate in summer sports began practicing in April and competed at local and sectional competitions to advance to the annual state Summer Games. These sports include Bocce, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, and Track & Field. The ceremony awarded medals to all the athletes who participated.
